Decision on Samacheer Kalvi flayed
The Peoples Union for Human Rights (PUHR) has condemned the decision of State Government to defer the implementation of “Samacheer Kalvi” (uniform syllabus for various streams of school education under the State government), saying the proposed syllabus would not improve the standard of students.
In a statement issued by Rajni, Advocate and State Organiser, PUHR, here on Tuesday, she has stated that the uniform syllabus scheme was a pioneering effort that would reduce the gap between the poor and the rich in getting education and would also prevent commercialisation of education.
The scheme was not implemented in haste but was done after conducting many joint discussions, public enquiries and debates. Even if there was any lacuna, it should be looked into only after its implementation and to abruptly prevent its implementation after spending Rs.210 crore for printing text books that have been kept ready for distribution was highly condemnable.
The government's response stating quality of the syllabus was not up to the mark was nothing but an excuse. In the guise of providing better syllabus, it could only lead to a condition where education would get commercialised. The complete issue could also guide the parents and general public to come to a conclusion that government schools cannot provide better quality of education.
The government should withdraw its decision and bring back the uniform syllabus in the current academic year itself, the forum said.
